LYPA Rider of the Week: Raelee Taylor

5 Quick Questions:

Q: How did you get into riding?

Well, I would have to say my grandfather. He rode bulls in his younger days. I never grew up around horses but when I was, say about 10, he got me a horse. She was a phenomenal, old gruella mare! I started off with local 4-H showing and gaming, and did a local rodeo association that year. Since then I have always loved horses. Without my grandfather, I think I would be lost. This year he has really pushed me and has always hauled me since the showing days. He has a lot of connections with great local trainers so they help me a lot, thanks to him.

Q:Do you have a good luck charm?

You bet I have a good luck charm. Its a cross pendant with the NFR number tag on it, it reminds me to never give up and trust the Lord. I have actually ran without it once and we hit a barrel along with 4 poles and our goat got up after a face full of dirt. Since that day I make sure that is the first thing I pack!

Q:Why do you ride?

I ride because it makes me feel like a better person. Not to mention it makes my grandpa extremely happy! Being on the back of a horse or even going into a arena can teach you so much. I have learned so much about myself and about animals from riding. The feeling riding a horse is really hard to explain. I ride because when I look at my filly, I see hopes and dreams.

Q:How do you calm those pesky show nerves?

I calm my nerves in many ways. My first resort is to not listen to any times the announcer says, for some reason when I do hear times I get really stressed and worked up. If I do manage to get all nervous and shaky, I stretch. It really relaxes my muscles and feels great! Shaking my feet like windshield wipers works too. Just slip your feet out of your stirrups and go nice and slow! Sounds weird but that also loosens your legs up if you are not wanting to get off your horse!

Q: What’s the best piece of horse advice you’ve been given?

Oh goodness .. I have been given so many words and advice this past year. One that I probably say in my head at least 9 times a day would be, “repetition, repetition, repetition”. Doing things over and over really helps, and eventually you gain muscle memory. Having that muscle memory will save you in and out of the arena.

LYPA Rider of the Week: Kenzie McAlister

Kenzie was one of our first 80 members of the Lakota Young Professionals Association, learn more about her journey below!

5 Quick Questions:

Q: How did you get into riding?

I got into riding thanks to my family. My pawpaw, Toxie, had always had horses and he always had me on a horse. He taught me the fundamentals of barrel racing and continues to help me. My grandpa Butch also taught me how to ride and some training tips. I wouldn’t be here with out them☺️

Q:Do you have a good luck charm?

I don’t have a specific good luck charm, but I always talk to my horse when I’m getting ready to run. It makes us feel like a team…like 1 person, almost. It calms her down and that gives us both confidence. I also say a little prayer that asks to keep my horse and I safe and clean before our run, and you cant forget my RanchDressn Tie-Dye pants? Those give me a boost of confidence, since I know I’m almost always the only one wearing those!!

Q:Why do you ride?

I ride for those who can’t ride. There’s people out there who would do anything to swing a leg over a horse. I have that exact opportunity every single day. My friends at school think I’m a rockstar for riding a horse at 30 MPH at a metal barrel. So, they are my reminder that this could be different. I could be hurt or not have a horse. I wish every body could ride or at-least own a horse, but unfortunately that’s not how it goes. This is just a constant reminder to me.

Q:How do you calm those pesky show nerves?

I don’t always calm my show nerves completely down. I tell myself that it’s going to be ok and I get my mind off of it by talking to a family member or a friend there. I also just watch. It keeps my mind on what I need to do to successfully be placed higher.

Q: What’s the best piece of horse advice you’ve been given?

The piece of advice that sticks with me from a horseman is from Fallon Taylor. She has always been an idol to me, and when she said this it just seemed to be burnt in my brain: “The world is your alley way, so you better prance”. It’s not big “advice” but it taught me to stand out and be proud of my horse and I. Every time I see someone glaring at my clothes, horse, or trailer I just repeat this little piece of wisdom and it brings a smile to my face. The second piece of advice I got is, listen to your horse. I don’t know who I heard this from, but it has changed the way I look at my horse. The advice stated:
“It’s not a blinged out, shiny saddle. It isn’t a special blanket, and those aren’t the name brand SMBs, but my horse is comfortable. Listen to your horse, watch their body language. Listen and see if your horse is worried or anxious.” This piece made me start looking deeper into my horse and making sure she was comfortable.

LYPA Rider of the Week: Sarah Nelson

A college student who always makes time for riding, Sarah Nelson is a tenacious rider who always encourages others to be the best they can be, and is always willing to give help to those who need advice or riding tips!

Q: How did you get into riding?

I started riding before I could even walk and then had to force my parents into letting start taking lessons and from then on, I was hooked!

Q:Do you have a good luck charm?

My best friend made me a cross pendent made out of horseshoe nails. Ever since I put it on, it has brought me good luck! I also have a pair of lucky socks… lol

Q:Why do you ride?

I ride because it makes me feel proud of myself. It is the most freeing, fleeting feeling in the world.

Q:How do you calm those pesky show nerves?

I have been rodeoing for a while so I don’t get as nervous as I used to. Before barrels and breakaway, I listen to music that gets me super pumped up and before goats, I can’t listen to music because I have to stay calm so I don’t face plant lol

Q: What’s the best piece of horse advice you’ve been given?

The best advice that I ever got was from my dad. When I was 6, my horse took off with me and I almost fell off. When I finally got my horse to stop, I got off and my dad told me that if I got off right then, I would never get back on again. When you’re scared, get back on and face your fears.

LYPA Rider of the Week: Logan Kennedy

Q: How did you get into riding?

I got into riding before I could walk. My daddy bought my first horse when I was 6 months old. Between my dad and my pawpaw, they both taught me how to ride and about the great lessons that horses can bring into your life.

Q:Do you have a good luck charm?

When I ride, I never forget my lucky charms. My pawpaw died when I was 16 and my dad recently passed. They both accompanied me to every rodeo I went to and they will continue to ride with me as my angels.

Q:Why do you ride?

I ride because of the passion and love that I have for my horse and the sport. I’ve never felt so empowered than I do when I ride. I know that when i’m on my horse, the world is a beautiful place and that God is so great.

Q:How do you calm those pesky show nerves?

Like every rider, we all get nervous. I calm my nerves through prayer. Wherever I am, I pray and then I know that whatever happens in the arena, I will give all glory to God.

Q: What’s the best piece of horse advice you’ve been given?

I’ve been given a lot of advice from other riders in my lifetime. If I had to choose the wisest advice from someone, it would have been from Sarah Laborde. She told me that wherever I go in life, my dreams are never too wild or crazy to fulfill. I make my own destiny and if I want to be a great rider, I have to be the one to work hard and put in the time and effort into practicing and bonding with my horses.

LYPA Rider of the Week: Daytona Santiago

This week’s Rider of the Week is from Waupaca, WI. Daytona is a very active rider in her community and is happiest when she’s around her horses, or in the saddle!

5 Quick Questions:

Q: How did you get into riding?

I’ve always wanted a horse ever since I was really little. My parents got me horse back riding lessons for my 6th birthday and I’ve been riding ever since.

Q:Do you have a good luck charm?

My good luck charm are my tie dye jeans from Ranch Dressn. Every time I wear them at competitions we always do really good! I was wearing them when I won 2016 NBHA Youth 2D State Champion.

Q:Why do you ride?

I ride because being around horses makes me happy and it’s what I love to do. My horses are what I care about most!

Q:How do you calm those pesky show nerves?

I get really nervous before runs. I usually sing a song in my head while I’m waiting for my turn. I also use lavender oil on me and my horse. But what really helps me is to loosen up my legs and feet so I’m not sitting so stiff from being nervous, just petting my horse, not watching the other riders as I’m waiting, and talking to someone.

Q: What’s the best piece of horse advice you’ve been given?

When Tai was first being trained for barrels, I would get some lessons once in a while to help me ride her better. I was told to scream with my legs, whisper with my hands. This has really helped me because instead of steering with my hands, I use leg pressure. I’ve worked on this a lot with Tai and now we can do the barrel pattern without me having to use reins at all, I just use leg pressure and this has really helped our pattern!
