BIO
My name is Victoria Fey, I’m an 18 year old barrel racer from New York. I have 3 horses but 2 are seniors so Stitch is the only one of mine that I compete on. I began barrel racing professionally on my mom’s mare after a year of smaller shows when I was 12 and we were placing in the 1D within a few months and were the 3D youth champions and 2D youth reserve champions that year. The next year we were 5th in the 1D youth. When I began running Stitch he was a challenge due to prior mishandling and from Jewel who had been there, done that, there was a lot of frustration and tears. But I’ve learned a lot about patience and just what it means to be successful with your partner that only you believed in for the longest time. This year Stitch and I weren’t as consistent as I wanted to be but we were placing at the top of the 1D before financial issues made it difficult for us to go to shows to continue earning points. Those financial issues caused from my dad dying suddenly in March of 2015. Due to many unforeseen circumstances I’ve taken a break from school and will be attending college in fall of 2017. Despite life trying to discourage me in the past few years I’ve continued to keep my chin up and push through, finding ways to move forward towards my dreams. Though I may no longer be running towards my goals, I continue to move forward. Confucius once said, “It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop.” Losing my dad and training Stitch have taught me many things, like independence and trusting my gut; but above all, accepting my losses with grace rather than grief and knowing that sometimes life can’t always follow the path we want it to go, but the detours we take on the journey to our goals can sometimes shape us into the best versions of ourselves.
