Thinking Outside The Box!

Thinking Outside The Box!

By Joe Camp From the TheSoulofaHorse.com

This is simply the Coolest Thing Ever! Your horse is fifteen to twenty feet away from you when you step up onto the mounting block. You cluck a couple of times and lo and behold he sidesteps all the way over to the mounting block and stands there patiently waiting for you to climb on.

No way, I said. How in the world would you teach your horse to sidestep to you? From fifteen feet away! It’s just not in the logic pattern of everything we’re told to teach the horse… “give to pressure”… not step into it!

But I saw it with my own eyes and was blown away. I did spend a few minutes attempting to figure out how I would approach teaching this to Cash. Very few minutes because I came up with nothing. So I raced off to Monty Roberts’ Equus Online University (where I spend a lot of dinner times because Kathleen is still in California most of the time and it’s lonely out here in TN). And believe it or not… the concept was incredibly simple… and so logical… and within the grasp of anyone regardless of how long you’ve been working with your horses. Honest!…Read the full article at: http://thesoulofahorse.com/blog/thinking-outside-the-box/

For Beginners Only: True Relationship is About Trust

For Beginners Only: True Relationship is About Trust

By Joe Camp From the TheSoulofaHorse.com

Leadership is not relationship. Partnership is not relationship. “Respect” is not relationship. Relationship does not ease along slowly, getting better and better. It either is or it isn’t. Relationship with a horse is not based upon love, and snuggles, and hugs and kisses.

One of the first things a lot of folks set out to teach beginners is to get your horse’s “respect” so that you will be safe. So that your horse won’t hurt you. At first blush that’s a reasonably sane concept. But where there is no relationship of trust, whether these teaching folks choose to tell you this or not, there is always an element of domination involved in an attempt to obtain a “show of respect” from an untrusting fearful horse…..Read full article at: http://thesoulofahorse.com/blog/for-beginners-only-true-relationship-is-about-trust

Why Bitless? | The Soul Of a Horse

Why Bitless?

By Joe Camp From the TheSoulofaHorse.com

One good reason.

Sometimes I think I’m really stupid. Like back when I thought that metal shoes nailed to a horse’s hoof seemed to be the right thing to do. I didn’t question it. In fact, I wanted to know why Cash came to us with only shoes on his fronts, none on his backs, when everyone was saying a horse’s hoof would disintegrate without the protection of a metal shoe. That’s precisely what I was told. Enough said. And I didn’t question it. That’s what makes me feel so stupid. I didn’t question it. At least at the moment.

Then one day I read that a horse’s hoof is supposed to flex. And that flexing has a purpose. It circulates blood, which promotes a healthy foot, and provides a hydraulic type of shock absorption for the joints, ligaments, and tendons of the leg. And it helps the heart pump blood back up that long leg. The ramifications of shutting down that flexing by nailing a shoe on the hoof are huge and onerous (see Why Our Horses Are Barefoot)….Read full article at: http://thesoulofahorse.com/blog/why-bitless-2/#sthash.w7wGD3RH.dpuf
